Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Recognition of Prior Learning in Australia.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that evaluates your existing skills, knowledge, and experience against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. If you have sufficient experience in your trade, RPL allows you to gain a formal qualification without repeating training you've already completed through work.
Does RecogniSKILL issue qualifications?
No. RecogniSKILL is an education facilitator, not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). We connect experienced tradespersons with accredited RTOs who conduct assessments and issue all qualifications. Our role is to guide you through the process and match you with the right RTO for your circumstances.
How much does RPL cost in Australia?
RPL costs typically range from $1,500 to $4,000 depending on the trade, qualification level, and the RTO. The cost varies based on the complexity of the assessment and whether gap training is required. Contact RecogniSKILL at +61 2 4011 9566 for a referral to an RTO who can provide a specific quote.
How long does the RPL process take?
The RPL process typically takes 4 to 20 weeks. This includes evidence collection (1-4 weeks), RTO assessment (2-8 weeks), and gap training if required (2-12 weeks). The timeframe depends on how quickly you can provide evidence, the RTO's schedule, and whether any additional training is needed.
Is an RPL qualification the same as a normal qualification?
Yes. A qualification obtained through RPL is identical to one obtained through traditional classroom or apprenticeship training. Both are nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and carry the same weight for licensing and employment purposes.
What trades are eligible for RPL?
RPL is available for over 22 trades including carpentry, electrotechnology (electrician), plumbing, bricklaying, air conditioning, painting, cabinet making, floor finishing, glass and glazing, landscaping, roofing, scaffolding, and more. If you have substantial work experience in a trade, you may be eligible for RPL assessment.
Can I get a builder's licence with RPL?
Yes. RPL qualifications are generally accepted for builder's licensing in all Australian states and territories. However, licensing requirements vary by state (NSW Fair Trading, QBCC in Queensland, VBA in Victoria, etc.). You will need to check the specific requirements for your state, which typically include a trade qualification plus additional experience.
What evidence do I need for RPL?
RPL evidence typically includes: work samples (photos/videos of jobs), references from employers or supervisors, certificates from previous training, resume detailing work history, job descriptions, and evidence of any informal learning. The specific requirements depend on your trade and the qualification you're seeking.
